The Moscow Mule

Sip into Autumn with a Seasonal Favourite

Ahh, autumn — the season of cosy nights, early sunsets and, of course, delicious cocktails. As the evenings grow colder, the question becomes: what should you be drinking? To find the answer, we turned to our in-house expert.

Roberto, our Head of Cocktails, recommends a timeless classic that perfectly captures the flavours of the season. Although it’s a drink we love all year round, the Moscow Mule truly shines during autumn.

Below, discover everything you may not know about the Moscow Mule — from its fascinating history to how it’s made, plus easy seasonal twists that make it ideal for cooler evenings.

What Is a Moscow Mule?

Simple, refreshing and undeniably delicious, the Moscow Mule is a true cocktail classic. At its core, it’s made from just three key ingredients: vodka, ginger beer and fresh lime.

Traditionally, the Moscow Mule is served in a copper mug. However, here at Beaufort House, we prefer a tall glass that allows the flavours to shine.

Interestingly, the cocktail dates back to 1941. It was created as part of a collaboration between John Martin, the owner of Smirnoff Vodka, and a local bar owner looking to sell excess ginger beer. By adding lime, they created a drink that would soon become iconic.

Moscow Mule Ingredients

To make the perfect Moscow Mule, you’ll need:

2 oz vodka

3 oz ginger beer

½ oz freshly squeezed lime juice

Ice

Simple ingredients — yet, when balanced correctly, they create something truly special.

How to Make the Perfect Moscow Mule

Not all Moscow Mules are created equal. In fact, there are a few insider secrets that elevate this cocktail from good to exceptional.

First and foremost, Roberto recommends choosing a high-quality vodka. This ensures a smooth finish and makes every sip more enjoyable. After all, a great cocktail should feel effortless.

Moreover, achieving the right balance between ginger, lime and vodka takes experience. Adjusting these elements can result in a sweeter or spicier profile. Therefore, don’t hesitate to let our bar staff know exactly how you like it — they’re experts for a reason.

Why the Moscow Mule Is an Autumn Favourite

Spicy, sweet and refreshing, the Moscow Mule captures everything we crave in an autumn cocktail. The ginger beer provides comforting warmth, while the vodka and lime keep it light and refreshing enough for more than one round.

Additionally, there are plenty of ways to give the classic an autumnal twist. Roberto suggests adding apple cider or apple juice for a subtle sweetness. Meanwhile, fresh ginger can be added for those who enjoy a little extra kick.

Whichever way you prefer it, the Moscow Mule is hard not to fall for during the colder months.

What Should You Pair with a Moscow Mule?

If you’re feeling peckish, the Moscow Mule pairs beautifully with lighter dishes. Fresh salads and seafood work particularly well.

For example, our salmon tartare or pan-fried salmon fillet perfectly complement the cocktail’s crisp, spicy notes. As a result, it’s an ideal choice for a relaxed evening at the bar.
